After launching SmartRunner, the app never closes, even if I exit it. If you launch the program again, another copy runs. So after playing around with it for a while, there are 5 copies running in memory and you must force kill all of them.

I second this. I have seen the behaviour with other GPS applications, but this one will keep several MB occupied. My guess would be that the process keeps running after the application is closed, because its still holding on to the GPS satellites, which also is a waste of battery. I uninstalled the app for now, but if there is a fix I would be a happy user...

This problem is fixed with version 1.4.5.5 Beta (see link here in the forum). If you would some new stuff besides fixed bugs you have to wait for our 1.6 release which should be out till end august.
